Maya* and I have enjoyed a few fun and fabulous photo shoots around town. We like to mark the big occasions with them – birthdays, new year’s eve, graduation. After they move to London to study fashion design, we’ll have to start celebrating their visits ‘home’ to Larnaca with fashion shoots that showcase their unique creations 🙂
I bought this glorious garment in Damascus in 2009. My dance before the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque in Larnaca was a form of prayer. In the words of Helen Reddy: I am woman, hear me roar. I feel most alive when in the company of colourful creative craziness. Insanity is a well occupied space in my life. It is where freedom, creativity and love meet. Releasing some pent up energy in one of Larnaca’s many derelict houses, the rubble of which buries the memories and past lives of people forced to flee othering. There are millions of Palestinians across the globe. Destroying and stealing their land can never erase the Palestinian culture or identity. When I feel Damascus within me, I smell jasmine, see turquoise and hear the sweet sound of the oud.
*Maya is my inspired and inspiring child. Their name appears frequently in these pages, as they are not only my greatest love, but also my muse and my teacher.
